Deck Staining

Most wooden decks need to be re-stained every couple years to prevent fading and moisture penetration. Homeowners like you can re-stain a deck yourself, but it can be time-consuming and labor-intensive.

Depending on the size of the deck, it can take days to do it right. Oz Wash Cleaning is an expert in the process of deck cleaning, sanding, staining, and sealing. Here at Oz Wash Cleaning, we want to see the deck before giving an estimate to re-stain it (but we can give a ballpark estimate when the exact square footage is submitted). Things that can impact the cost of the deck staining/refinishing include square footage, the level of sanding required, type of stain used and detail of work needed. Some wood surfaces are in a lot worse conditions then some. So they take a lot more attention to get back to a presentable condition (sometimes even the floorboards need to be replaced because of rotting).

We at Oz Wash Cleaning charge by the square foot. Average prices to re-stain a deck range from $2.00 to $4.50 per square foot. It will cost more also to have the underside of the deck stained. Rails and balusters can also be sanded or washed, stained and sealed for a separate price.

We clean every deck before re-staining it, usually by wetting the deck surface down with a stain removing solutions to strip the deck of its old stain (this process is lighter on the deck surface, allowing the wood to look newer longer). After which the deck is lightly pressure washed to remove the solution and any other possible contaminants that sometimes stick to the deck surface. The deck must sit for 24 hours until it’s completely dry before staining can begin (sometimes less depending on how warm it is outside). We do not charge extra for the cleaning solutions or the stains that we buy, that is all included in the total price that we give upfront in the quote.

Type of stain

The higher-quality the stain that the-the higher the overall cost. Transparent stains can work for decks that are in great shape, (we recommend semi-transparent oil based stains) but solid color stains help conceal the flaws in an older deck.

Surface material

Our prices vary depending on the type of material used to build the deck. (some woods are more difficult to clean and need more attention in the refinishing process) Typical materials include cedar, pine, redwood, vinyl, and composite.

Decks that haven’t been maintained well often require a power sanding before the stain and seal. Power sanding costs more than the light sanding that is required when a deck is re-stained.

Moving furniture

We ask customers to move furniture before we arrive to get the job done. Removing the furniture allows for a smoother workflow and makes it possible to get right to work when we get to the job site.
